Sony Keeps IPL Rights

After a tough fight for the Indian Premier League (IPL), broadcaster Sony Entertainment Television, now known as Multi Screen Media(MSM),has managed to keep the IPL rights after entering into a fresh deal. It has signed up with the World Sport Group (WSG) in a $1.6 billion deal, valid for the next nine years through 2017.

The earlier 10-year contract, which MSM couldn't protect, was worth $918 million for telecast and $108 million for promotion of the tournament.

BCCI had terminated the contract with MSM and inked a fresh deal with WSG Mauritius on March 15. MSM had then moved the Bombay high court, which held that the cricket board could open talks with other broadcasters for the IPL telecast rights. MSM then bid more than its original contract to bag the rights, all over again.

MSM CEO Man Jit Singh said, "The acquisition of the media broadcast rights for another nine years reaffirms our commitment to the Indian subcontinent. WSG CEO Venu Nair added: "Our base objective with the IPL franchise was to place Indian cricket on the global sports calendar.''

IPL will work closely with Cricket South Africa to ensure that the necessary logistics and technicalities are completed before it kicks off on April 18.

Govinda Not Contesting This Year

Actor and sitting Congress MP from Mumbai North Govinda on Monday announced his decision not to seek re-election to the Lok Sabha, claiming his rivals in the party had created obstacles for him during his tenure.

Talking to reporters at his residence, Govinda said two weeks ago the central party leadership had asked the state unit to speak to him about whether he was willing to contest again.

"But, some people here did not want to convey the message to me. Finally, I took a call deciding against contesting because the delay in announcing the new candidate will work against the party," Govinda said.

Govinda, who defeated BJP heavyweight Ram Naik in the 2004 Lok Sabha election, denied that he has been given a raw deal by the party.

"I was literally gheraoed within my own party. Some people did not want to work with me. So I decided to just campaign rather than contest again. But, chief minister Ashok Chavan, finally asked me whether I wanted to contest again," he said.

Asked what he had lost and gained as a politician in the last five years, Govinda said," I would not like to blame the political field for my destiny. Gaining experience is never bad. Knowledge is power."

Varun Gandhi Victimised?

Terming the invoking of the NSA against Varun Gandhi as "wrong", Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday alleged that the stringent Act has been used to settle political scores.
"The framing of charges under NSA against Varun Gandhi is completely wrong. In fact, National Security Act has always been used to settle political scores... why did the police fail to arrest Varun and his supporters before the roadshow," Yadav told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

He alleged that the move to frame charges under NSA against Varun, the BJP candidate from Pilibhit, was "a tactic by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party to generate sympathy towards Varun Gandhi".

"If the BJP-BSP are not having any sort of tacit understanding, then why was Varun not arrested before the roadshow," said Yadav.

Lashing out at the state government, Mulayam alleged, "In the Auraiya PWD engineer murder case, a SP worker Kamlesh Pathak was framed under NSA, while the accused roamed free. It is due to these reasons that I oppose the NSA since it was implemented."

Asked if any other candidate will be fielded in case the court disallows actor Sanjay Dutt to contest from Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, Mulayam said, "This is completely a hypothetical question."

What are the reasons for Insomnia?

Insomnia goes hand in hand with poor health, including weight gain and even obesity, say a study done by an Indian American psychiatrist. Sarosh Motivala, assistant psychiatry professor at Semel Institute, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and colleagues looked at two hormones that regulate the body's energy balance and our hunger pangs.

The study, based on 38 male participants divided into two groups - 14 insomnia sufferers and 24 healthy subjects, found that chronic insomnia disrupts one of these two hormones. To date, no study has evaluated nocturnal levels of the two hormones, ghrelin and leptin, in primary insomnia patients.

Ghrelin, a peptide secreted by the stomach, stimulates appetite and increases before meals. Leptin, which affects body weight and is secreted primarily by fat cells, signals the hypothalamus (in the brain) regarding the degree of fat storage.

Decreased leptin tells the body there is a calorie shortage and promotes hunger, while increased levels promote energy expenditure. Researchers compared healthy sleepers with those suffering from chronic insomnia and measured the levels of the two hormones at various times throughout the night.

They found that while leptin levels averaged out over the night to be roughly the same between the two groups, levels of ghrelin were 30% lower in insomnia sufferers. On the face of it, a decreased level of ghrelin would seem to inhibit weight gain; it is an increase in ghrelin, after all, that stimulates appetite.

But Motivala compared his findings with other, earlier studies on sleep deprivation and speculates that a switch may occur during the day. Sleep loss leads to increased ghrelin and decreased leptin, a "double whammy" that stimulates appetite. Motivala is currently working on a study to examine this switch, said an UCLA release.

Motivala did his schooling in Mumbai, where he was born and did his BA in psychology
in 1997 and clinical internship in behavioural medicine from UCLA in 2001.

A New Solution

Forget artificial implants. You would soon be able to enlarge your breasts “naturally”, thanks to scientists who have developed a new
stem cell therapy which can increase a woman’s cup size while reducing her stomach fat.

A team at Princess Grace Hospital in Britain has come up with the treatment that involves extracting stem cells from the spare fat on belly or thighs and growing them in a woman’s breasts, the reputed British newspaper Sunday Times reported.

During the process, cells are isolated from the excess fat on stomach or thighs and then the concentrated stem cells are mixed with another batch of fat before finally being injected into the breast. However, it could take several months for the breast to achieve the desired size and shape.

And, according to the scientists involved in the study, an increase of one cup size is likely, with the potential for larger gains as the technique actually improves.

Kefah Mokbel, who is leading the team, said: “Implants are a foreign body. They are associated with long-term complications and require replacement. They can also leak and cause scarring. “This (new technique) is a very exciting advance in breast surgery. The (breasts treated with stem cells) feel more natural because this tissue has the same softness as the rest of the breast.”

A trial involving ten breast cancer patients who had their assets removed has started in Britain. Another project is underway to check the technique on healthy women eager to go for breast enlargement.

According to the researchers, the stem cell treatment may be suitable only for modest increases in breast size, but will conduct research to find out whether larger augmentations can be achieved. “We are optimistic we can easily achieve an increase of one cup size. We can’t say yet if we can achieve more. That may depend on the stem cells we can harvest,” Mokbel said.

Shatrughan Vs Shekhar??????

In what could set the stage for a star war in Patna, the Congress is seriously considering fielding actor Shekhar Suman
to take on Bollywood veteran Shatrughan Sinha in Patna Sahib.

Apart from both being from the tinsel world, there are other reasons for Congress to consider Suman for the high-profile battle against Shatrughan. They belong to the same Kayastha community and are likely to attract young voters.

Though Kayasthas are not considered a politically significant group, after delimitation, they have ended up as a major chunk of voters in the Patna Sahib seat.

However, the possibility of Suman being chosen for Patna Sahib has already created resentment within Congress with some other aspirants lodging their protest with the leadership.

Going it alone in Bihar after UPA constituents RJD and LJP refused to give it a respectable number of seats, Congress is now depending on well-known candidates who can attract votes on their own.

Varun Gandhi Arrested

The UP government on Sunday night booked BJP's new mascot Varun Gandhi under the harsh National Security Act (NSA) for "inciting
communal passions with his inlammatory utterances" against the minority community at a rally in Pilibhit early this month. TOI was the first to report, in its Sunday edition, that the UP government was planning to invoke NSA against Varun.

Addressing a hurriedly called press conference, additional cabinet secretary Vijay Shankar said that a copy of the order has been served on Varun in Pilibhit jail. Pandey said that the district magistrate upon inquiry found all charges levelled against the Gandhi scion correct and he has been charged under Section 3(2) of the NSA.

The slapping of NSA appears to be a pre-emptive move to keep Varun in custody even if he is granted bail in other cases. The maximum detention period under NSA is three months, until an advisory board reviews the order. The decision could also polarise votes in Uttar Pradesh ahead of elections.

According to the DM's report, Varun had delivered an inflammatory speech in Dalganj locality on March 7 against which an FIR was lodged in Barkheda police station. Then on March 28, while on way to Pilibhit, he changed his route without informing the district authorities. He also violated Section 144 and then incited his supported through his speech, leading to a law and order problem.

After the news trickled in, the BJP leaders went into a huddle. Sources told TOI that Varun will be challenging the order in the high court, terming it malicious and vindictive. "The move is aimed at appeasing minority and Varun will appeal against it," a party leader told TOI.

Earlier in the day, the state government had slapped Varun with various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sec 307 for attempt to murder.

Talking to TOI, additional director general of police (law and order) Brij Lal said Varun had been booked for rioting, destruction of public property, and preventing public servants from discharging their duty. "Section 307 pertains to the violence triggered by the leader which led to grievous injuries to cops on duty," Lal said.

This apart, there more FIRs were lodged against BJP supporters and leaders by jail authorities and SI Dhirendra Singh. One of them implicates the state BJP campaign in-charge Kalraj Mishra and former MP BK Gupta as well for violation of Section 144, causing a riot and damage to public property and forcing their way into the courtroom while CJM, Pilibhit, Bipin Kumar, was taking up Varun's surren der application. Mishra, incidentally, had specially gone to Pilibhit to show party's solidarity with "one of the most competent and talented leaders" ― as he referred to Varun later in the day at a press conference.

Meanwhile, sensing trouble for their leader, Varun's loyal cadre is already planning a combat strategy for Monday when he is taken to the court for the hearing. "If he gets the bail, it could be a brief affair, we won't like to add to the controversy, but if the government flexes its muscle then there could be fresh clashes as tempers are already running high," said a senior party functionary.

Maneka Gandhi, who visited her son in prison, imputed a political conspiracy to frame her son and other BJP leaders in Saturday's episode. Varun is not a criminal and it is unjust to implicate him in criminal cases, Maneka declared in Pilibhit.
